Artificial Intelligence for Science featuring Azton Wells of Argonne National Laboratory In-Person / Online
Argonne National Laboratory is a scientific hub with initiatives ranging from cancer research to quantum chemistry to astrophysics and cosmology. Dr. Wells will talk about his experience as a postdoctoral researcher and early-career computational scientist by exploring:
-
AuroraGPT, the effort to train and develop trillion-parameter scale models with open methods and tailored to scientific use;
-
GenSLM, the project to create language models for biological sequences to be used for cancer research and evolutionary modeling;
-
and the Hybrid-hardware Advanced Cosmology Code (HACC) team to create domain-specific foundation models for cosmology, astrophysics and astronomy.
Using AI for science applications introduces a host of concerns distinct from commercial applications: from marginalizing graduate students to enabling rather nefarious protein design, this talk will explore how AI represents both immense dangers and opportunities for advancement.
